Check your policy first
Look for "roadside assistance", "towing" or "recovery" in your policy schedule. Some insurers include it, some sell it as an add-on, and basic third-party plans may not have it at all. If it is not written there, assume it is not included.
What is often not covered
- Off-road and desert recovery, unless your policy has a specific 4x4 or off-road extension.
- Towing after an accident, which usually goes through your insurance claim rather than roadside assistance.
- Limits on distance or on the number of call-outs per year.
- Towing to the garage you choose, instead of the insurer's approved garage.
When calling a recovery company directly makes sense
- Your policy does not include towing, or you have used up your call-outs.
- You want the car taken to your own garage or dealer.
- The car is low, luxury or a sports car and you want a flatbed with care.
- You are stuck in sand, a basement or somewhere your cover excludes.
- You cannot get through to your insurer, or the wait is too long.
Questions to ask your insurer
- Is towing included in my policy, and how many times a year?
- Is there a distance limit?
- Can the car go to a garage I choose?
- Is off-road or desert recovery included?
- What number do I call, and is it available at night?
Whoever you call, safety comes first: hazard lights on, get behind the barrier, and call 999 if the car is stuck in a live lane.
